Approximability of Average Completion Time Scheduling on Unrelated Machines
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that minimizing the average job completion time on unrelated machines isAPX -hard if preemption of jobs is allowed. This provides one of the last missing pieces in the complexity classification of machine scheduling with (weighted) sum of completion times objective. The proof is based on a mixed integer linear program. This means that verification of the reduction is partly done by an ILPsolver. This gives a concise proof which is easy to verify. In addition, we give a deterministic 1.698-approximation algorithm for the weighted version of the problem. The improvement is made by modifying and combining known algorithms and by the use of new lower bounds. These results improve on the known NP-hardness and 2-approximability.

Heuristic approach to solve hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines
In hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFS) with unrelated parallel machines, a set of n jobs are processed on k machines. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the HFS scheduling problems with unrelated parallel machines has been proposed to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan). Since the problem is shown to be NP-complete, it is necessary to use heuristic methods to ...

This paper presents a novel, multi-objective model of a parallel machines scheduling problem that minimizes the number of tardy jobs and total completion time of all jobs. In this model, machines are considered as unrelated parallel units with different speeds. In addition, there is some precedence, relating the jobs with non-identical due dates and their ready times. Sequence-dependent setup t...
متن کاملSolving a New Multi-objective Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem by Hybrid Teaching-learning Based Optimization
This paper considers a scheduling problem of a set of independent jobs on unrelated parallel machines (UPMs) that minimizesthe maximum completion time (i.e., makespan or ), maximum earliness ( ), and maximum tardiness ( ) simultaneously. Jobs have non-identical due dates, sequence-dependent setup times and machine-dependentprocessing times. A multi-objective mixed-integer linear programmi...
متن کاملA PTAS for Minimizing Weighted Completion Time on Uniformly Related Machines (Extended Abstract)
We consider the well known problem of scheduling jobs with release dates to minimize their average weighted completion time. When multiple machines are available, the machine environment may range from identical machines (the processing time required by a job is invariant across the machines) at one end of the spectrum to unrelated machines (the processing time required by a job on each machine...
